Chores and ASD

I had to at age 10 make my bed, do my own laundry, put my toys away, clean up after myself, set the table, unload the dishwasher, put out the garbage, recycling, get the mail, feed and take care of the pets, and walk them. I got $5 a week for doing my chores regardless of how well they were done. that was 20 years ago and my parents did not know that I had any disability so they made me do everything that a normal kid would have to do.  Some of the chores I had to do when I was 6 and others got added after.

  1. I make my son do chores at home everyday and always have. I always knew the had a developmental delays so when the FX dx came I was not surprised. (FX runs strong in our family). I know what he is capable of and I push him to do things. Even if he fails a few times I make him do them again and again until he gets it right. By no means am I hard on him but I expect him to things just like his older brother (who does not have FX) has too. We all fail at new things a few times. :)

    1. I think that is the best way to go it can really build self confidence and self esteem to be able to do the stuff that other people can do.
